dental implants and fixed prosthetics

We are going to compare dental implants and fixed prosthetics so you can better understand their differences and benefits.

Dental implants

Dental implants are artificial titanium roots that are inserted into the maxillary or mandibular bone. A crown, bridge, or prosthesis is placed on these implants.

• Durability: Implants can last over 20 years with proper care.

• Aesthetics: They provide a very natural appearance and integrate well with existing teeth.

• Hygiene: They require good oral hygiene but do not affect neighboring teeth.

• Cost: Generally, they are more expensive than fixed prosthetics, but their durability may justify the cost in the long run.

Fixed prosthetics

Fixed prosthetics can be bridges or crowns that are cemented onto natural teeth or implants. They cannot be removed by the patient.

• Durability: Their lifespan may be shorter than that of implants, as they depend on the health of the teeth they support.

• Aesthetics: They can also offer a good appearance but may not be as natural as implants.

• Hygiene: Hygiene is crucial, as the natural teeth supporting the prosthesis can be susceptible to cavities and other diseases.

• Cost: They are usually more economical than implants but may require more frequent replacements.

Considerations

• Oral Health: If you have healthy neighboring teeth, implants may be a better option as they do not require grinding down contiguous teeth.

• Bone Loss: Implants help prevent bone loss around the missing tooth, something that fixed prosthetics cannot do.

• Comfort and Stability: Implants are often more stable and comfortable in the long term.

Each case is unique, so it is important to determine which option is best for you.
